Complementary Activities

Having complementary activities is a strategy for sustainability that helps to maintain citizens' interest and attracting new users. A Ciclovía Recreativa should be constantly renewed and complementary activities are a fundamental part of this dynamic. The development of complementary activities can be the responsibility of the entity that administers the program, the local government, civil society or a combination of these.

From the moment that these activities are planned, it is important to take into account that they: respond to the needs and tastes of the population, are free to use, are directed at diverse sectors of the population, do not interfere with the functioning of the Ciclovía Recreativa or mobility in the city, are in line with regulations on the use of public space and commercial activities.

Possible complementary activities can include activities in the area of art and culture, sports and recreation, health, science and technology, and community development. The following table lists some examples of complementary activities from the Ciclovías Recreativas across the Americas.

Art and Culture	Plays, photography expositions, concerts, dance classes, reading spaces, libraries and didactic playrooms, artisan exhibits.
Sports and Recreation	Soccer, volleyball, aerobics, yoga, tai chi, tae bo, spinning, extreme sports, cycling classes, skating classes, self-defense classes, hiking, giant board games (chess, dominoes, checkers), games and activities for children (such as magic, clowns, mimes, theater, origami, drawing and painting).
Health	Health promotion information and services such as: physical activity recommendations, body measurements, vaccinations, blood donation drives and cervical cancer screening.
Science and Technology	Interactive games and expositions.
Community Development	Workshops about protecting the environment, anti-crime education campaigns, workshops and games focused on gender issues.
Others	Bicycle repair, food and water stations, security recommendations, pet care areas, rescue equipment demonstrations
